Tutorial - Red Scorpions Dreadnought in under 2 1/2 hours

As promised here's a small tutorial of the creation of this dreadnought. The fella was primed black and mounted upside down on his base.

First basecoat of Vallejo Model Air German Grey using my airbrush.

Black was airbrushed from the bottom up to add some shadows to the model

Vallejo Model Air Medium Sea Grey was used to light up the upper parts of the model.
I sprayed right from the top of the model so only the parts exposed to "direct sunlight" were lightened up.

After masking I used Vallejo Model Air Golden Brown (airbrush) / Vallejo Game Colour Leather Brown (brush) for the basecoat of the yellow.

For the first highlight I took Vallejo Model Air Dark Yellow for both the airbrush and standard brush.
Since the colour is mixed for airbrush use it isn't highly opaque and perfectly suitable for nice blendings.
I only highlighted the upper and side parts so the shadow areas will stay brown.

The next highlight is Vallejo Model Air Golden Yellow.
The upper parts received a good amount of coating but I left some dark yellow on the side areas for a nice blending effect.

The final edge highlight was made with a 50/50 mix of white and golden yellow.
PlasCan was painted from bottom to top with Vallejo Model Air Gun Metal Metalizer, Gun and Silver for the final highlight.

The weathering begins! Using GW Dark Flesh and Vallejo German Grey / Medium Sea Grey I sponged the first rust effects on the model.
I kept an eye on the most exposed areas/edges to make it as realistic as possible.

]
Using thinned down Blazing Orange, Dark flesh and watered Vallejo rust pigments I added rust on rivets, deepenings and cables.
I also sponged dry pigments on the whole model to give it a rusty shading on some areas.

Using Vallejo Model Air light blue and pure white I gave the plasma can a subtle OSL effect.
I painted several lenses in shiny blue colours, imho this is a nice contrast to the worn and rusty battle look.

Thats about it, a 100% painted up dreadnought in around 2,5 hours. I hope somebody will find this tutorial useful, thanks for taking a look!

Red Scorpions - Rhino

This is the last vehicle of my weekend's painting spree - the humble Rhino!
Not much to say about it since the painting was pretty much the same as the Dreadnoughts.

The next posting will include a compact tutorial of how I painted up the second dreadnought.

Red Scorpions - AOBR Dreadnought #2

As promised here are some pictures of my second painted up dreadnought.

I tried to speed up the painting process as much as possible and I was able to finish the whole model in around 2 1/2 hours (excluding base, dread is not fixed yet).

I photographed every step to make a small tutorial so keep an eye on this thread if you're interested, I will post it quite soonish.

Due to faster painting this one is a bit more sloppy in regards to edge highlighting and weathering, in addition the front symbol came out rather bad.

Keep in mind that all three vehicles were prepainted in space wolves colours so some detail was already gone.

Red Scorpions - AOBR Dreadnought #1

Hi chaps!

This mini was painted in space wolves colours and some details were already missing so I went for some extensive weathing to hide most of the lost details.

As usual I took my airbrush for most of the work but also tried some regular brush blending on the yellow front stripes. Weathering was done with the casual sponge, some rust colours and vallejo pigments. I also removed the left symbol on the front but as the cleaning went a bit wrong I took my drill and gave this fella some serious dakka damage instead.

I kinda rushed this mini (as usual) so I was able to complete it in under 4 hours (excluding base, the dread is not fixed in the picture). In the next post I'm gonna show you the second AOBR dreadnought with Plasma Cannon and Rocket Launcher!

Red Scorpions - Commander Culln

This is the chapter master of the Red Scorpions - Commander Culln.

He was a blast to paint as most of the minis from Forgeworld. He could have received a little more love and I'm thinking about adding some weathering effects but overall I'm very pleased with how he turned out.

Red Scorpions - The beginning

Hi chaps!

Here are some quick shots of a test mini I did for my next army project - the Red Scorpions.

I used a Vanilla Marine I had left over in my bits box so the right shoulderpad will be exchanged with a fancy FW chapter one.
I tried a pretty simple and fast paint scheme which is more or less like this (model was primed black):

Armor:
- Basecoat Vallejo Model Air German Grey (Airbrush)
- Highlight Vallejo Model Air Pale Grey (Airbrush)
- Badab Black Wash
- Fine highlight Codex Grey

Shoulderpad:
- Highlight Vallejo Model Air Pale Grey (Airbrush)

Yellow parts:
- Basecoat Vallejo Game Color Leather Brown
- Highlight Vallejo Model Air Dark Yellow
- Highlight Vallejo Model Air Gold Yellow
- Fine highlight Vallejo Model Air Gold Yellow/white 50/50

Bolter:
- Highlight Vallejo Model Air German Grey
- Boltgun Metal + Mithril Silver Highlight

Eyes:
- Basecoat Vallejo Model Air Tank Brown
- Highlight from blood red to blood red/white
- Fine dot of white
- OSL with heavily watered down Blood red (has to be improved)

Weathering:
- Vallejo pigments "light yellow orce" and "light slate grey"

All in all I'm pleased with the overall look, although he is a bit sloppy on the painting side of things.

Tau Air Caste

Hello folks!

Here's a quick shot of a little project I did in my spare time.
I recently switched from GW paints to Vallejo game colours. I did this step mainly because I fell in love with the Model Air range I'm using for my airbrush equipment so I used this little fella for testing some of their colours.

All in all I'm pretty pleased with this rawboned alien dude, although his blue suit could have been more smooth in the end. I have another model of the air caste in the queue so stay tuned for another picture update soonish!
